The rainy season starts in April and lasts until the end of October. The Khmer New Year, which takes place on mid April, traditionally marks the beginning of rainy season. This is also the beginning of what locals call the low season. They talk about touristic crowd of course, since the city becomes much quieter during this period. On July and August, Siem gets a bit busier again because of many western countries’ summer vacations, before September and October get back to a low occupancy rate for hotels, restaurants and touristic attractions. Thus this is the best time to come if you want to find the best possible prices. Visiting the most important touristic sites without millions of people surrounding you is also highly valuable. The only problem will be the rain, which you’ll generally have to endure for 2 hours or more in the afternoon and the evening, but attending a real tropical shower is something you must do at least once in your life.
At the contrary, you will have nothing but a great sunny weather and a tolerable heat from November to March. On the other hand, this is when you also have to slalom between thousands of tourists from all over the world wherever you go in or around the town. Here’s a free tip for you: try to come here between December 10th and 20th; the city is very quiet before Christmas vacation, and this is the best climate you can find, dry and not too hot.
